Markham Fire to donate 360 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to vulnerable residents

Alarms provided by Enbridge Gas Inc. through Project Zero to improve home safety

MARKHAM, ON – November 20, 2019 – Markham Fire and Emergency Services today announced it has received 360 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms from Enbridge Gas Inc. through Project Zero. These alarms will improve home safety and will help bring fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths down to zero. The units will be donated to vulnerable and at-risk residents in Markham.

“The units will end up in senior homes and social service agencies such as the York Region Children’s Aid Society,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “These agencies will then distribute them to members of our community. Project Zero is an applaudable collaboration that speaks to our strong sense of community. By looking out for one another, we are giving the gift of peace of mind, saving lives and ensuring no voice is left behind.”

Project Zero is a public education campaign that receives financial backing from Enbridge Gas Inc. This year, Enbridge Gas Inc. invested $275,000 in Project Zero, which will see more than 9,100 alarms provided to residents in 40 municipalities across Ontario. Over the past 11 years, the program has provided more than 44,356 alarms to Ontario fire departments.

When properly installed and maintained, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms help provide the early warning to safely escape from a house fire or carbon monoxide exposure. Carbon monoxide is an invisible toxic, odourless gas that is produced when fuels such as propane, gasoline, natural gas, heating oil or wood do not burn completely in fuel-burning appliances and devices such as furnaces, gas or wood fireplaces, hot water heaters, and more.

“We are pleased to be part of Project Zero this year so we can make a positive impact in our community,” says Markham Deputy Fire Chief, Adam Grant. “Ontario homeowners are required to install a working carbon monoxide alarm adjacent to each sleeping area of the home if there’s a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage. Similarly, if you live in a condo or apartment building with a service room or a garage, these alarms must be installed in the room and adjacent to each sleeping area above, below, and beside the service room and/or garage.”

“Carbon monoxide is known as the ‘silent killer’ for a reason, and we have proof that prevention saves lives. We know that the best way to avoid carbon monoxide exposure is to eliminate it at the source by properly maintaining fuel-burning equipment, and that the alarms are a critical second line of defense to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning,” says Steve McGivery, Director, GTA East Operations, Enbridge Gas Inc.

“The objective of Project Zero is to deliver combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to Ontario communities who need them the most,” said Jon Pegg, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chief, Emergency Management. “It’s a program that municipal fire departments can adopt to educate their communities about the requirement for all Ontario homes to have a CO alarm if they have a fuel burning appliance or an attached garage.”
