Top 100 Festivals & Events in Ontario Awards

MARKHAM, ON — March 3, 2020 — Two of the City of Markham’s signature events, Markham’s Canada Day, and the Markham-Milliken Children’s Festival, presented by Tim Hortons, were celebrated as 2020 Top 100 Festivals & Events in Ontario at the annual Festivals & Events Ontario (FEO) awards gala, the very first time they were submitted for the competition.

“These awards are a testament to the excellence of Markham’s events as places to connect, celebrate and discover,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Our residents, partners and attendees have enjoyed them over the years, and I am proud that two of Markham’s events are now recognized by Festivals & Events Ontario as being among the best in our province.”

The Top 100 Awards acknowledge festivals and events that excel within the Ontario event industry and represent some of the most well-known and respected celebrations in the province. In winning, Markham is proud and delighted to be awarded alongside notable festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Luminato Festival, Doors Open Toronto, the Havelock Country Jamboree, and Canada Day in our nation’s capital.

“Being honoured in the Top 100 is a wonderful recognition of the hard work and dedication of both festival committees, the City’s events staff and staff from several departments,” said Trinela Cane, Corporate Services Commissioner at the City of Markham. “We invite everyone to experience these events for themselves and to join us this summer for Markham’s Canada Day and the Markham-Milliken Children’s Festival, presented by Tim Hortons!”

The City of Markham also took a leadership role at the FEO conference this year by joining with special events colleagues in Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Whitchurch-Stouffville, in partnership with Central Counties Tourism and the York Region Arts Council, to host the FEO Conference Host Community Reception titled “We the York.” This showcased a sampling of the great municipal and event experiences available across York Region.

Markham’s Canada Day unites all members of our diverse community. In 2019, Canada’s birthday was marked by welcoming 50 new Canadians to our country in a Citizenship Ceremony with the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, followed by a free Senior’s Luncheon for more than 800 guests, a People’s Parade featuring more than 50 local community groups, children’s activities, and performances on the big stage at Milne Dam Park for thousands of participants. The grand finale fireworks capped off an incredible day of fun!

The Markham-Milliken Children’s Festival, presented by Tim Hortons, is the party kids wait for each year, and it’s the perfect way to beat end of summer boredom! Now in its 20th year, the Festival has attracted thousands of families from across Markham, the Greater Toronto Area and southern Ontario. This “must-attend” special summer event is host to a full day of fun for kids, featuring live entertainment, princesses and superheroes, play zones, inflatables and more. Join us on August 22 at the Aaniin Community Centre & Library, located in the heart of southeast Markham, for our 2020 event.
