Markham Creates Community Challenge

Sharing & Celebrating Creativity during COVID-19

As we worked together (while apart) to conquer COVID-19 in early 2020, the City of Markham challenged residents to unleash their creativity virtually through the Markham Creates Community Challenge.

The Flato Markham Theatre, Varley Art Gallery of Markham, Markham Museum and the Markham Public Library joined forces to create this unique opportunity for the community. Residents were invited to submit a sample of their creativity for a chance to access exclusive mentorship with Canadian artists and industry professionals, and to ultimately have their work showcased by a recognized cultural institution when restrictions are lifted.

“The level of creativity displayed by the community was amazing,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “The challenge was meant to encourage creativity and connection during this very difficult time, and all expectations were exceeded. The level of art and expression we received blew me away. I encourage all those not selected as finalists to continue their creative journey. Congratulations Markham for rising to the challenge!”
