Standing in the Doorway: Lived Histories & Experiences of the Chinese Community

縈繞中華文化: 華人社區歷史和生活展覽

萦绕中华文化: 华人社区历史和生活展览

Home. Place. Belonging. Throughout Canadian history, people of Chinese descent have contributed to the development of our nation. They resisted and persevered, overcoming stereotypes, labels, and racist policies. They created homes and built places and spaces to foster connection and community.

Now, we commemorate and remember the contributions of Chinese Canadians over the past 100 years since the Chinese Exclusion Act. Markham Museum and the York Region District School Board Museum & Archives have worked in conjunction with YRDSB students, and the University of Toronto Museum Studies program to develop this exhibit. It is on display at Markham Museum from September 28, 2023 to February 25, 2024, and is available as an online exhibit  here. The exhibit will then travel to public venues and schools in York Region.

Explore, learn, and listen to the stories, traditions and knowledge of the diverse Chinese Canadian community from Markham and York Region.

Enhance your experience of the exhibition by taking part in our Visit, Shop, Dine program. Immerse yourself in Markham’s unique Chinese Canadian culture. Explore vibrant Asian retail centres, savour traditional and fusion cuisines, and learn the stories, traditions and knowledge of the Chinese community in Markham and York Region. By visiting the exhibition and shopping and dining with community partners, you can earn the opportunity to enter our contest and win a family membership!
