News Page

Please note that Markham Public Library (MPL) will no longer be offering Lynda.com as of December 31 due to privacy concerns. Please save all your certificates before December 31, 2019.

What alternative eLearning options does Markham Public Library (MPL) offer?

Although Lynda.com will no longer be offered as of December 31, 2019. MPL is committed to helping the people of our community build the skills they need.  The Lynda courses which have been most popular with our customers are also offered through our other eLearning options:

Universal Class includes over 500 courses on professional development, business skills, technology and computer applications.  Courses are both self-paced and instructor-led with opportunities to engage with others through online discussion forums.  Learners earn a certificate upon course completion.

LearningExpress Library offers professional development, academic and software skills.  It engages users through a variety of learning methods including interactive tutorials, videos, practice tests, articles and eBooks.

Cisco Networking Academy offers self-paced programs related to technology skills.  Courses are offered in 6 month sessions and delivered in modules featuring text, interactive media, labs and quizzes.  A Certificate of Completion is offered to successful students.

Why is MPL discontinuing Lynda.com?

Lynda.com was recently rebranded as LinkedIn Learning and to access the service, customers now need to create a LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn Learning’s new Term of Use surrenders to LinkedIn the power to share information contained in their LinkedIn Profile. Providing personal information allows browsing habits to be linked to personally identifiable information, a practice that conflicts with the library’s core value of customer privacy.

The changes in the Terms of Use for LinkedIn Learning do not meet our standards for protecting customer information and therefore we will not be providing continued access as of December 31, 2019.

MPL is committed to ensuring our customers’ privacy and safety within our walls or when accessing library resources online.
