FAQs

1.    How many videos are there each week? Are these to be completed daily or all at once?

Each week will have five different art activities to complete, including week one with the Civic long weekend. Each activity comes with instructions so that you can follow along with the video.  There is one video per activity. The choice is yours whether to do these activities once per day, or spend a full day making them all! Activities can take about an hour to complete, but the video is 15 minutes and you can pause, while your camper take the time cut and paste, for example.

2.    Are the sessions pre-recorded or live?

All of the Varley Art Gallery's Camps to Go are pre-recorded so that each activity can be done at the camper's own pace. Each video includes a short art history lesson, instructions on how to use professional artists' materials and step-by-step instructions on completing a specific art project. As the videos are designed by artists and art education professionals, they are broken down into easily managed steps so that each camper can succeed in making their work of art, at their own pace.

3.    What is a "Camp to Go Kit?" How do I receive mine?

Each session has it's own uniquely designed Camp to Go Kit. These kits will contain the materials required to complete all five of the art projects for the week, including instructions that go along  with the videos.  Camp to Go Kits will be available for pick up the week prior to your session.  Our Camp Director, Julie, will e-mail and/or call you to set up a time to come by the gallery. We will offer day and evening pick-up times while maintaining physical distancing and other safety protocols. Please note that masks or face coverings are required in all indoor spaces in Markham.

Your favourite summer staff are back! We are so pleased to welcome back Candice and Avesta to lead these fun, virtual art adventures!

My name is Candice and this is my third year teaching at the Varley Art Gallery, but I also have experience working in the educational departments of other galleries and institutions. I hold a BAH from Queen's University in Art History and am currently completing my Master's Degree in Art Gallery and Museum Studies at the University of Manchester (remotely at this time). Art has always been my passion, whether it be creating it or studying the works of others and I am beyond excited to share that interest with our campers and have them develop creative pieces of their very own!

My name Avesta and I have had the pleasure of working with the Varley Art Gallery camps for two years. I am currently a first year student at OCAD University, specifically studying Drawing and Painting. Art has been my passion from a very young age, and expressing myself through art has always been a source of positivity and growth. Now I’m thrilled to be able to spread the joy of art with our campers and to guide them towards creating their very own artistic masterpieces.

My name Julie and this is my fourth year at the Varley Art Gallery. I've taught art classes for children and adults, in topics ranging from painting to mixed media to sculpture and ceramics. I hold a BAH from York University in History and English and a masters degree in Museum Studies from the University of Toronto. I strongly believe that everyone needs a creative outlet to engage their imagination and emotions, so I'm ecstatic to be supporting virtual art programs.
