Markham's new Official Plan provides a vision for growth in Markham to 2031, based on the principles of protecting natural environment and agricultural lands, building healthy communities, increasing travel options and maintaining a strong economy. The 2014 Official Plan was adopted by Council on December 10, 2013 and approved by York Region on June 12, 2014.

The new Official Plan has been appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) and is not yet fully in force. On November 24, 2017 the Ontario Municipal Board issued a Partial Approval Order, which was updated on April 9, 2018 by the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal, bringing parts of this Plan in force. Until a Tribunal decision to approve all or part of the new Official Plan has been made, the 1987 Official Plan will continue to remain in force.
