Single-Use Plastics

Markham is breaking free of Single-Use Plastics

Single-Use Plastics are plastic items that are typically used only once before being thrown out.

The most common are:

  • Beverage/party cups and lids
  • Coffee/hot beverage lid stoppers
  • Straws and stir sticks
  • Cutlery
  • Styrofoam packaging and take-out food containers
  • Grocery/produce bags

What Goes Where

Single-Use Plastics are particularly problematic from an environmental sustainability perspective because they have limited reuse, recyclability or compost options. Additionally, many of them end up as litter on our roads, parks, trails and creeks.

The City of Markham continues to prove its leadership role by demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability and waste diversion.

Markham's Diversion Strategy: 2020-2023 will implement strategies and programs designed to achieve a target of 85% municipal waste diversion.
