MARKHAM, ON – June 22, 2020 – You are invited to attend the City of Markham’s very first virtual Canada Day celebrations online on July 1! Participate in a virtual experience unique to Markham, featuring all-day online activities and entertainment. Tune in to watch the National Celebrations with us as well at 1 PM and 8 PM.

“Canadians have always had incredible resolve,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “We come together in times of joy and in times of hardship. Now more than ever, as a country, and as a community, we are united and connected, and we continue to look out for one another. Let’s celebrate all that defines us as a strong and diverse community, let’s promote social cohesion and harmony, all while maintaining public safety, which is always our top priority.”

Markham’s virtual Canada Day entertainment will include a special community rendition of ‘O Canada’ to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the National Anthem, magic shows from Markham’s Canada Day favourite Doo-Doo the Clown, and your chance to participate in a live drumming circle hosted online by Canada Day Drumming.

Join our all-day interactive activities by testing your Canadian trivia knowledge in our four trivia contests sponsored by Tim Hortons; voting for your favourite Markham’s Great Canadian Colouring Contest submissions sponsored by Alectra Utilities; and watching special Canada Day greetings from Markham’s elected officials and VIPs.

To help us celebrate while we stay apart to stay safe on July 1, light up your home or business in red lights, or decorate yourself, your family or your pet in Canada Day attire, and share pictures of your Canada Day pride with us using the hashtag #MkmCanadaDay.

“Although this year’s celebrations have moved online so we can all do our part to physically distance to stop the spread of COVID-19, we are planning a day full of fun for all ages,” says Canada Day Organizing Committee Chair, Councillor Amanda Collucci. “We look forward to having you tune in on July 1 to celebrate the True North Strong and Free!”

Capping off our online celebrations using the Snapd Community Hub App are virtual fireworks sponsored by Kylemore. Download the free Snapd Community Hub App by 5 PM on June 30 for a chance to win a special prize package. More details can be found at https://yourvoicemarkham.ca/canadaday/survey_tools/test.
