Marriage Licence Application
Please do not apply for a marriage licence unless you require one. Refunds will not be issued.
To obtain a marriage licence, please follow these steps:
- Complete the marriage application online at least four (4) weeks before your wedding date (this includes paying the Marriage Licence Fee of $196.50 online)
- Once completed, paid and submitted, you will receive an email of the completed application form and the receipt of payment (please check your junk mail if you do not see it in your inbox)
- Print the application form and ensure both applicants sign the form (your signatures must match your official ID signatures). Please note that electronic signatures are not accepted on marriage applications. Applicants must provide a handwritten (wet) signature that matches the signature on the valid government issued identifications being submitted.
Collect all other documents required for the licence for each applicant:
Identification Requirements:
- Two (2) pieces of identification are required, per applicant. Both pieces of identification must be the original, photocopies and/or certified copies are not accepted.
- Both pieces of identification must not be expired.
- One piece of identification must have a photo and include a signature.
- Both pieces of identification must provide legal name and date of birth
- First and last names must match on both pieces of identification and change of name certificate must be provided, if applicable.
All identification must be in English of French or be accompanied by a translation, certified by the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO)
Accepted Forms of Identification:
- Canadian Passport of Canadian Travel Document
- Passport from another country
- Birth Certificate
- Canadian Citizenship Card or Certificate (must contain date of birth)
- Driver's License
- Government Issued Photo ID Card
- Permanent Residence Card
- Certificate of Indian Status Card (First Nation)
- Nexus Card
- Military identification
- Record of Landing (IMM 1000)
Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or 5688)
Canadian Divorce:
The original or court certified copy of the Certificate of Divorce is required. Photocopies will not be accepted. Originals or court certified copies may be obtained from the court which granted the divorce, and will be returned to you. A judgement or Court Order/Divorce Order issued by the Court will not be accepted.
Foreign Divorce:
- A foreign divorce which was issued outside of Canada will require a Foreign Divorce Authorization (FDA) from the Province of Ontario. This process can take up to four (4) weeks to obtain.
- Scan and email these documents, along with your signed application to marriageappointment@markham.ca
- You will be contacted by a City of Markham staff member to schedule an appointment to review your documents and receive your licence
On the day of your appointment:
- Go to the Clerks Department at the Markham Civic Centre (101 Town Centre Boulevard)
Important
- Bring all your original forms of identification and divorce certificates (if applicable) for both applicants.
