Planning For the North Markham Future Urban Area

The City of Markham has undertaken a comprehensive planning process to guide development of the Future Urban Area lands in north Markham. This Future Urban Area will accommodate neighbourhood and employment growth in north Markham. A Conceptual Master Plan has been developed based on a number of background studies to guide development for the entire area. The Conceptual Master Plan will inform and guide future land use planning, infrastructure planning, and development approvals within the Future Urban Area.

At a Glance 

The North Markham Future Urban Area (FUA) is a planned community in north Markham. It will bring together homes, jobs, shops, schools, parks, community services and protected natural areas. 

  • About 38,000 people
  • About 12,000 homes
  • About 19,000 jobs

Four planned communites:

  • Berczy Glen
  • Angus Glen
  • Victoria Glen
  • Robinson Glen

The FUA was identified for growth in Markham’s 2014 Official Plan. The City is planning the area as one connected community so that development, infrastructure, services and natural areas work together. The plan protects important natural features and provides green spaces for people to enjoy. It also coordinates homes, employment, roads, transit, walking and cycling routes, parks, schools, water and wastewater services

Community Vision

The City’s vision is a complete, healthy, safe and sustainable community where people can live, work, shop, learn and enjoy parks close to home, while focusing on:

  • Protecting and enhancing natural areas
  • Providing a range of homes and places to work
  • Locating shops, services, schools and parks close to homes
  • Making it easier to walk, cycle and take public transit
  • Building safe streets and sustainable infrastructure

 

How the Area is Planned
  1. Study the environment. Identify important trees, plants, water and wildlife areas and determine how to protect them.
  2. Create a Conceptual Master Plan. Set the overall structure for land uses, transportation, water, wastewater and stormwater systems.
  3. Prepare secondary plans. Add detailed policies for each community.
  4. Review development applications. Consider proposals for homes, roads, parks and other community features.
Current Status

The Conceptual Master Plan is complete and provides the overall framework for growth. Secondary plans guide development in Berczy Glen, Angus Glen, Victoria Glen and Robinson Glen. Buildout will occur over many years as detailed plans and development applications are approved.
