City of Markham and MIIPOC Continue to Reduce Employment Barriers Through Growing Internship Partnership

MARKHAM, ON – November 25, 2025 – The City of Markham and The Mentorship Initiative for Indigenous, Black and Planners of Colour (MIIPOC) are proud to continue their partnership aimed at enhancing inclusion and reducing employment barriers for racialized individuals in the planning profession. Now entering its third cohort, the internship program has become a cornerstone of Markham’s commitment to diversity and workforce development.

This initiative provides four-month paid internships for MIIPOC members and graduates, offering hands-on experience in areas such as development review, site planning, economic development, and cultural planning. Interns are supported by dedicated mentors and work collaboratively with City staff across departments.

Since its launch, the internship program has produced several inspiring success stories. Two interns have transitioned into full-time roles, one with the City of Markham and another with a neighbouring township, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness in opening career pathways. Additionally, two participants have chosen to pursue further education, including one who has enrolled in a master’s program, further strengthening their professional development. The program’s impact was also recognized in Y Magazine, published by the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI), which featured the internship as a model for inclusive workforce initiatives in the planning field.
