City of Markham Offers Expert Tree Planting Support at a Reduced Cost for Markham Residents This Spring
MARKHAM, ON – June 4, 2026 – For the eighth consecutive year, Markham residents can receive expert assistance planting native trees at a reduced cost, thanks to a continued partnership between the City of Markham, the Regional Municipality of York, and Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF).
Spring is a great time to plant. Through the LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Program, eligible property owners can choose from over 30 native tree species and receive personalized planting advice and services from a certified arborist, all for just $100 per deciduous tree or $50 per evergreen tree (select species only). The program is available to residential, multi-unit, and commercial properties, with a limit of five trees per property per year, space permitting.
“The City of Markham is excited to partner with York Region to bring back the LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Program for our residents,” said the Mayor of Markham. “Planting a tree is a simple way to make a real difference in our community. Trees help make our neighbourhoods greener and more beautiful, and provide a home for local wildlife. Through this program, residents can get expert advice and support at a reduced cost, making it easier to plant trees and enjoy the benefits for years to come. I encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity and help grow a greener Markham.”
The LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Program empowers residents to make informed planting decisions that support the city’s environmental goals.
“Native tree planting is a powerful tool for improving both individual properties and the wider urban environment,” says Janet McKay, Executive Director of LEAF. “It reduces heat in neighbourhoods, improves air quality, supports local biodiversity and contributes to a more resilient community. We are proud to work with the City of Markham to make it easier for residents to improve their outdoor spaces while building healthier, greener neighbourhoods across the city.”
Each participant receives an in-person consultation with a LEAF arborist, who assesses yard conditions, such as sunlight, soil quality, and available space, and recommends species best suited to the site. Full-service planting is available, with LEAF staff returning to complete the planting. A do-it-yourself option is also offered for those who prefer to plant on their own. Detailed care instructions are provided to help ensure long-term tree health and success.
Residents who have participated in the program are quick to praise the experience:
“We had the pleasure of working with LEAF for a backyard tree planting, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. From the initial consultation to the final planting day, the team was knowledgeable, professional and incredibly passionate about urban forestry. They helped us choose the perfect native species for our space, taking into account soil, sunlight and long-term growth. The planting itself was smooth and efficient, and they left us with clear care instructions to ensure our tree thrives for years to come. It feels great to contribute to a greener urban community, and we’re already seeing the positive impact in our yard. Highly recommend LEAF to anyone looking to enhance their outdoor space while supporting local biodiversity!”

“I've purchased with LEAF now for two years in a row. The delivery doesn't require you to be home, and they actually deliver directly to your backyard. I've purchased pawpaws and five native shrubs. The shrubs have done well since last year and are great. You can't get this kind of product anywhere else.”
– Jessica, City of Markham resident
