Markham holds vigil for Humboldt Broncos
MARKHAM, ON - April 9, 2018 — Markham residents are invited to join Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Members of Council and members of Markham's hockey community, including Markham Royals and minor hockey associations, on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. for a vigil at the Markham Civic Centre.
Hockey members are encouraged to wear their jerseys and members of the public are encouraged to bring with them any sports equipment, hockey sticks, hockey memorabilia or other tokens to leave at the Peace Flame outside the Markham Civic Centre as a way to pay tribute.
“Hockey is a part of the fabric of what it means to be Canadian," says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. "This unimaginable tragedy has devastated the Humboldt community; families have been changed forever and a nation is grieving. It is important to come together, show our support and to remember.”
All flags will be lowered at City of Markham facilities from April 9 to 13, in honour of the fifteen lives that were tragically lost, and in support of the survivors, their families and the Humboldt community. A book of condolences will also be available for the public to sign at the Markham Civic Centre and at seven of Markham's community centres.
We stand in mourning with all those impacted by this tragedy.
