Mayor Frank Scarpitti Offers Condolences on the Passing of Former Mayor, Donald Cousens
Former Mayor, Donald Cousens died on Thursday, February 23 at Markham Stouffville Hospital. Don served as Mayor from 1994 to 2006.
"On behalf of myself and Markham Council, I extend our condolences to his son, Paul, and daughter, Mary, as well as his much loved grandchildren Suse, Charlotte, and Drew. Don Cousens was a real force at the York Region District School Board, the Province of Ontario and here in Markham," said Markham Mayor, Frank Scarpitti.
Cousens was educated at Queen's University and received a Masters of Divinity at Knox College, University of Toronto. An ordained Presbyterian Minister, an officer of the Canadian Forces, he was also an executive at Honeywell Ltd., before entering politics in 1972.
Cousens was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1981. He was re-elected in 1985. Highlights of his provincial career were: Minister of Correctional Services, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Citizenship and Culture and Deputy Speaker of the House.
As a member of York Regional Council, Don was Chair of Finance (1997-2002) and Founding Chair of the Region Character Council. He was also past Chair of World Vision Canada. Don was involved in the founding of the York Technology Network, now known as TechConnex.
A book of condolences has been set up in his honour in the Great Hall of the Markham Civic Centre. Flags have been lowered to half mast at all City facilities.
