Mayor's Statement on Passing of Gord Downie

“On behalf of the City of Markham, we would like to extend our deepest and sincerest condolences to the family of Gord Downie and to the Tragically Hip,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

“As a country, we are mourning the loss of a great poet, performer and artist. His legacy and the Tragically Hip’s music is forever woven into the fabric of our culture. Downie and the Tragically Hip masterfully told the Canadian story and inspired a nation.”

Mayor Scarpitti goes on to say, “this is a sad day for Canada and for the City of Markham. Downie and his bandmates graced the stage in Markham more than 20 years ago, forever leaving an impression on our city; a fond memory for many of our residents.”

The Tragically Hip headlined Another Roadside Attraction music festival at the Markham Fairgrounds in July 1993 and in July 1995.
