Doors Open Markham features seven NEW sites
MARKHAM, ON – September 17, 2018 – Have you ever wondered, “ What’s behind that door?” Doors Open Markham provides visitors with exclusive access to 19 locations that are not generally open to the public. Join us for this free one-day event to tour cultural and historical sites that reflect our community's past, and experience the diverse cultures that contribute to Markham’s unique charm.
“This is a chance to explore Markham’s hidden gems, learn about our community’s history and cultural heritage ... the possibilities are endless!” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “There is something for everyone: Markham Fire Station is a favourite for kids of all ages, architectural enthusiasts will be wowed by the Wong Dai Sin Temple and if you haven't yet, be sure to visit the Aaniin Community Centre and Library, Markham's newest facility!"
“One day + 19 fascinating locations + FREE admission = Doors Open Markham,” says Doors Open Committee Chair Kenneth Ng. “Visit first-time sites and past favourites, for their architecture, their heritage, or the interesting things going on. Each site features an eclectic program of unique activities including guided tours, ghost stories, live music, contests, workshops, community fairs and much more. Some of this year's sites include Aaniin Community Centre &Library, Rouge River Brewing Company, Y-Space, Wong Dai Sin Temple and Unionville Train Station.

- Step into the world of entrepreneurship and innovation at Y-Space, York University's state-of-the-art community engagement centre, located in Markham Centre.
- 'Aaniin' or 'welcome' to Markham's newest facility! Named to honour Canada's Indigenous Peoples, Aaniin Community Centre & Library is like no other community centre you've seen before. Come enjoy all the unique features this centre has to offer!
- The Wong Dai Sin Temple is home to the Fund Loy Kok Institute of Taoism, and won the 2016 Governor General's Medal for Architecture.
- Visit the Vaults at the Varley! Enjoy gallery and vault tours at the home of Frederick Varley’s fine collection of oils, watercolours and drawings.
- St. Maurice and St. Verena Coptic Orthodox Church is a new place of worship with a unique architectural design that combines ancient tradition and contemporary appeal. Come for a guided tour and stay for the BBQ, bouncy castle and yard sale.
- Stop by Markham's first craft brewery for a taste of Rouge River Brewing Company's award-winning American style ales, sour beers and Belgian farmhouse style ales.
