Engineering Services
The City’s Engineering Department is responsible for the planning, design approval, construction and inspection of engineering infrastructure projects.
The department consists of the following four sections.
- Infrastructure and Capital Projects
- Coordinating and managing the design and construction of roads, sidewalks and trails, bridges, sewers and watermains

- Victoria Square Boulevard Improvements
The City has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to study potential improvements to Victoria Square Boulevard, from the Woodbine Bypass to Woodbine Avenue, to enhance the community with continuous sidewalks, cycling facilities and roadway infrastructure, while preserving heritage features.

- Highway 404 Collector Roads Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study
The City of Markham has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study for the Highway 404 North Collector Roads to confirm the final alignment of the new north-south and east-west roads within the Highway 404 North Planning District area which extends from approximately 400 metres north of 19th Avenue and south to approximately 600 metres north of Elgin Mills Road. Highway 404 defines the western limit and Woodbine Avenue defines the eastern limit.

The City of Markham has done a transportation planning study. It includes a four-point strategy for road improvements, transit, education, and policy. It will help the City plan its yearly projects and put them in place.

- Transportation
- Developing transportation and traffic engineering policies, plans, design guidelines and operating practices to improve or expand the multi-modal transportation system in the City. This includes reviewing technical reports and drawings in support of development proposals.
- Managing traffic operations of the City road network to ensure safe and efficient movements of pedestrian, cyclist and vehicular traffic within the City road rights-of-way
- Municipal Inspections
- Carrying out quality assurance and issuing acceptance and final assumption for all municipal infrastructures within new subdivisions and site plans
- Reviewing and approving residential infill grading and servicing applications (RGS), tendering and administering construction contracts for residential infill service connection works, and inspecting final infill lot grading for undertaking security releases
