Better wastewater and water infrastructure for Markham residents
The governments of Canada and Ontario are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Canadians and their families have access to modern, reliable water, stormwater and wastewater services that meet their needs. These investments safeguard the health and well-being of residents, protect waterways and preserve local ecosystems, while also laying the foundation for new economic opportunities to strengthen the middle class across the province.
Mary Ng, Member of Parliament for Markham--Thornhill, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Michael Chan, Ontario Minister of International Trade and Member of Provincial Parliament for Markham--Unionville, on behalf of the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure, and Mayor Frank Scarpitti of the City of Markham, announced that eight projects in Markham will receive funding under the Government of Canada’s Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF).
Thanks to this total of $10.6 million in Federal and Provincial investments, residents of Markham will benefit from improved stormwater and water infrastructure. Projects like Markham’s Cast Iron Watermain Rehabilitation and West Thornhill Flood Control Program will help businesses and residents alike. These projects are essential to reducing flood risks, keeping our waterways clean and keeping our communities healthy and livable.
In addition to these projects, over $24 million in Federal and Provincial funding for 6 Regional Municipality of York water and wastewater projects will direclty benefit the City of Markham.
For the eight projects announced, the federal government is funding up to 50 per cent of project costs -- $23 million. The provincial government is providing up to 25 per cent— $11.6 million and the City of Markham and the Regional Municipality of York will contribute any remaining costs.
This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund.
