Flato Markham Theatre gets an Honorary Patron
As a community builder, entrepreneur and philanthropist Mr. Rehmatullah has made significant contributions to Markham. His extraordinary generosity has benefited youth, seniors, arts and culture, healthcare, and many charitable initiatives.
The celebration recognized his dedication to the Flato Markham Theatre which, through his support, has achieved cultural enrichment through diverse, world class theatre experiences.
“Shakir makes a real difference in the communities where he builds,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “He strongly believes that by supporting local services, the arts, and recreational activities, we can keep our communities active, healthy, and thriving for generations.”
Flato is a major corporate sponsor and official custodian of the Flato Markham Theatre. Its naming agreement with the City of Markham’s theatre made Flato the first corporation to have formed such a partnership in Markham’s history.
“At Flato, we believe that building communities means more than just building homes," said Shakir Rehmatullah - President of Flato Developments. "It is about giving back to the services and facilities that matter to residents.”
Over 100 guests attended the celebration to recognize Shakir for his long-term financial support and sponsorship of the Flato Markham Theatre and the arts in Markham.
Mayor Frank Scarpitti unveiled an honorary patron plaque that will be installed near the main entrance of the theatre. “On behalf of the City of Markham,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “I would like to thank Shakir for his tremendous contributions and commitment over the years to the success and reputation of this theatre, and to his support of so many important initiatives.”
A “Naming Rights Agreement” was approved by Council on April 3, 2012 – five years ago – providing exterior and interior naming rights of the Markham Theatre to Flato Developments. Over the life of the agreement Flato has contributed more than one million dollars to the Theatre.
In a new agreement that started January first of this year, Flato Developments is generously extending its sponsorship of the Flato Markham Theatre for 20 years, providing a total contribution of more than $2.3 million dollars to the Theatre.
Contemporary Canadian jazz pianist and vocalist Laila Biali performed as part of the event which included the Theater's Circle of Stars sponsors. The Circle of Stars program directly supports Theatre programs. Contributions support the world class productions and offer educational and community outreach initiatives to youth and people from all walks of life.
The event also featured, "Maple Morning," a short documentary film by Fahim Hamid Ali which premiered at TIFF earlier this year. The film brings light to the many contributions that Canadians of Pakistani origin make in all fields, from science to politics to the arts and more. On behalf of Flato Developments, the filmmaker and artist presented to the City of Markham, a painting, "Flight the Future," which inspired the documentary.
"Flato Developments demonstrates a true community and corporate partnership," said Mayor Scarpitti. "The City looks forward to many more years of working with Shakir and Flato to bring the best of live entertainment, enjoyment and enlightenment to our community."
