Markham Announces Appointment to Alectra
The City of Markham is pleased to announce the appointment of Don Lowry, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EPCOR, as the City’s independent representative on the Alectra Board of Directors.
Alectra is the new utility to be created from the merger of PowerStream, Enersource and Horizon Utilities effective February 1, 2017, and the purchase of Hydro One Brampton from the Province of Ontario on February 28, 2017.
Don’s appointment follows an extensive nationwide recruitment process. “The City received over 200 applications and interviewed 19 extremely qualified individuals,” said Ward 5 Councillor Colin Campbell, Board Chair of Markham Enterprises Corporation and Selection Committee Chair. “I was very impressed with the candidates who included leaders from the information technology, environmental sustainability, public utilities and health care sectors from across the country. Don was selected based on the breadth and depth of his experience and his exceptional track record.”
Don is a senior executive with direct experience in successfully leading the management and governance of major North American energy, telecommunications, power, and water enterprises. Don has also served with distinction on numerous corporate boards. Most recently, as the CEO of EPCOR, Don oversaw significant growth in the business, resulting in nearly $2 billion in dividends, taxes and franchise fees paid to the City of Edmonton over a ten year period.
“Markham’s ability to attract an individual with Don’s expertise and experience demonstrates our status as a world class city and signals the potential of the new utility,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “We are fortunate to have someone of his calibre apply and are delighted to have him as Markham’s independent representative on the new Alectra Board."
