Markham will honour victims of the Pittsburgh massacre at annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony
MARKHAM, ON – December 3, 2018 – Chanukah is the eight-day Jewish festival of lights, and at the heart of the festival is the nightly Menorah Lighting. Join Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Members of Council and Chabad Lubavitch of Markham to mark the celebration of Chanukah on Wednesday, December 5 for the annual ceremonial Menorah Lighting.
As part of the ceremony, Markham will honour and remember the victims of the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue massacre. Eleven people were killed on October 27, 2018 by a gunman who opened fire on the congregation while shouting anti-Semitic slurs.
“Chanukah is a time to celebrate new beginnings and a time to reflect on the blessings we have here as a community. The Menorah is a symbol of hope and peace and as we light the candles over 8 days, we remember those who have been victims of hatred and violence,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti.
