Stiver Mill: A Markham landmark brought to life
MARKHAM, ON - May 23, 2018 – On Saturday, May 26 the City of Markham celebrated the completion of the Stiver Mill Landscape Rehabilitation.
The Knabenkapelle Nördlingen, a 67-piece orchestra composed of young men aged 10 to 19, performed in traditional German attire. Nördlingen, Germany is one of Markham's sister cities with a special connection to one of Markham's founders, William Berczy.
Constructed in 1916 by the descendants of the original Berczy settlers, Stiver Mill is a historic landmark symbolizing Markham's agricultural heritage and is one of few 19th century industrial buildings remaining in Ontario.
“This was an important project not just to Unionville, but for our provincial history and Canada," says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Stiver Mill has been given a new life and it’s a central part of Unionville and will remain here for the next 200 years.”
The Stiver Mill Landscape Rehabilitation project includes the completion of the boardwalk to connect Unionville Main Street to Eureka Street, completion of the environmentally-friendly parking lot with permeable paving, landscaping and installation of lighting.
Funding for this project was provided in part by the Government of Canada through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.
