Yonge North Subway Extension
The Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) will extend Line 1 (Yonge-University) roughly 8 kilometres from Finch Station through to Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill, terminating just north of Highway 7.
As York Region’s top transit infrastructure priority, the YNSE is a catalyst for economic recovery and a more sustainable future. The project will provide essential connectivity to other rapid transit lines and serve our growing urban centres.
Identified in Goal 3 of the City of Markham's strategic plan, Markham is committed to supporting the implementation of the Yonge North Subway Extension alongside its various partners.

Project Background
The YNSE is an initiative under the Metrolinx-led Subway Program. The YNSE will extend Line 1 with five stations at Steeles, Bridge, High Tech, Clark, and Royal Orchard. The extension will connect to the Richmond Hill GO train and Highway 407 GO bus service, as well as local bus routes at every station.
Status
In August 2025, Metrolinx awarded the Advance Tunnelling contract to the North End Connectors (NEC) consortium and they have already begun pre-construction activities along the corridor and are under construction at the launch shaft site. Tunnelling is expected to begin in early 2027.
In October 2025, Metrolinx issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the separate Stations, Rail and Systems (SRS) contract. This is the first step in procuring a contractor to undertake the design, construction, supply, integration, and commissioning work on these key project elements.
Metrolinx has held virtual and in-person engagement events covering project benefits, route improvements, the property acquisition process, and other project details. Construction notices are posted on the project website and the public is welcome to meet with the Community Engagement Team at Metrolinx’s Community Engagement Office.
